Exhibit walls on casters make
moving exhibits easy
for Lombard Historical Society

We delivered exhibit walls on casters to Lombard Historical Society’s museum

Near Chicago, 700 lilacs were in full bloom along with other springtime flowers when we drove from Belle Plaine to Lombard Historical Society for a recent delivery. This is a rare gem which can’t be missed if you’re in the area!

It also features newly remodeled gallery spaces and offices in a historic building, a super cute gift shop area, and a lovely history. If you’re in the area, take a tour,  and during springtime enjoy the bloom of beautiful gardens.

We had the pleasure of meeting the director and team at Lombard Historical Society, and were able to assist with assembly and set up of their mobile walls on casters. In addition to touring the grounds and museum area, we got to see firsthand how customers experience unboxing and assembly, which helps better serve future customers.

The all-women staff found it simple to unload and cart the exhibit walls and hardware with a flat furniture dolly. Our hardware kit was intuitive and organized.

Over-the-top service

The event was in just a few days, but once the walls were carried in we noticed the ceiling was visibly shorter than the walls! As it turns out, the ceiling was accidentally mis-measured, so even though the walls were customized to be shorter than our standard 8′ 3 1/2″, they were still too tall. No worries – we can fix that!

We went to the hardware store, bought some tools and got to work. The walls can be modified in a pinch with the right equipment and know-how. (If you need to know how to do this, or think it’s a good idea for us to create a video showing how this is done, let us know by contacting us here).

We worked in their gazebo to avoid the rain (yes, it rained to add to the complexity of that day!) and our finish carpenter Chris was able to use a tracksaw to cleanly cut the tops of the walls and reattach the top vertical stud into place. Once modified, the walls were assembled and put into place in a span of a few hours, good as new and ready for the upcoming exhibit’s artifacts.

If by chance someone mis-measured or you purchased used walls that won’t fit, let us know. We can help with that. Pareti can modify the walls if you ship them back, you can have us come out to modify them on site, or you can contact a local finish carpenter or cabinet maker to make the changes and we can explain what to do.

We use natural materials for this purpose – so they can be modified with tools and materials found locally. While changes like lowering the height of the wall take experience and skill, other things like drilling a hole through the wall or screwing things into a wall are doable by just about anyone. Our customers can modify or repair their walls over time. Unlike plastic or metal, simpler materials are repairable and easy to change, making our walls trully sustainable and resuable for years. Had the walls been fabricated out of the country, or with complicated manufacturing processes or materials, they would have not been usable in this case. With our products, even if we hadn’t been present, our customer could have contacted a local finish carpenter or cabinet maker who would be able to make changes like this on site.

We modified walls on site to help a customer when they misjudged their ceiling height.

A far more challenging example of on-site modifications: Nike / Converse

The Nike / Converse Flagship Store and Museum in Boston required planned on-site modifications. The angles of their jewel-box shaped interior had no real right angles to create custom walls throughout, which made planning pre-fabrication tricky!

All angles were figured with angle finders, as no original building plans existed which offered the clarity we needed. On-site maintanence did all of the measuring via video meetings. Pareti fabricated everything in advance, and prepared for the unknown in case there were suprises.

The Nike space functioned as a former recording studio. Consequently, all walls had to cover the interior’s sound proof design precisely, as no permenant walls could be used for hanging artifacts. Knowing there was a high degree of risk for mis-measuring, we were able to fabricate some walls on-site if needed. In the end, only one or two panels were neede to create a perfect fit.

“Easier than we thought!”

Once we were back on track, the normal setup resumed. It is absolutely delightful when we hear customers talk about how easy the set up is! As patrons and board members alike walked through the exhibit space they remarked at how nice the walls looked.

Intuitive assembly

Our walls are extremely simple to assemble, but just for good measure we include lots of instructions, including:

  • How to receive a large shipment with or without a dock or forklift
  • How to check your shipment for damages
  • How to prepare for a damage claim in case we need to replace your items
  • How to unbox the crate
  • What tools you’ll need
  • Printed, PDF, and video instructions on how to assemble the walls

So what’s a curator / director / exhibit designer to do?

Use our fabulously strong and easy-to-move walls on casters, of course!

Historical museums face a particular challenge: they must preserve a historic building while exhibiting. Often buildings are gifted, and may have unusual walls like marble, sandstone, plaster, or other materials.

Another common challenge is working with a smaller staff. This presents a challenge when it comes to moving heavy gallery walls around for every new featured exhibit. Often there’s just one (aka YOU) to move and arrange everything. Our walls on casters are designed to helpk with that.

As Lombard Historical Society discovered, assembly is super simple and designed for the tool-challenged – meaning you don’t need to be a handy man to assemble our walls. Also, once assembled, you don’t need to be physcially strong to move them. Once assembled, you can work all alone on exhibits if that’s your thing.

Are they easy for anyone to move? Nope! Lock all four casters once in place, and they are very difficult to move or skid.
